5 Tips for a Productive and Successful Day

To become successful, you have to learn some of the habits of the world’s most successful and disciplined people.

Here are five habits shared among many individuals who have achieved tremendous success including Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz, Russell Simmons and Bill Gates.

Wake Up Early

Most successful entrepreneurs, professionals and individuals say they wake up at 5am daily and get most of their work done between 5am-7am. Not only is this a great time to wake up and get a head start on your day, but it also allows you to enjoy a moment of silence, because many people are still sleeping. You can also use this time of quietude for meditation, which research shows is good for one’s mental and emotional well-being. Russell Simmons practices meditation daily, which he credits for helping him maintain focus and inner peace. However, to be most productive, you have to go to bed early, so you can get at least 8 hours of sleep.

Eat Breakfast

Health experts including Dr. Oz and nutritionists have consistently emphasized the importance of eating breakfast. Referred to as the most important meal of the day, it also gives you a feeling of energy and positivity. It is also an opportunity to connect with your family, share goals and expectations for the week, which you can reflect on at the end of the day or week, depending on your individual schedules. Setting aside as little as 15 minutes to eat a healthy breakfast will start you off to a great day!

Create a Daily Task List

It is believed that for you to achieve any task or goal, you have to write it down. Not only does it serve as a visual reminder, but seeing it also motivates you and keeps you accountable. Make it a habit to write down a daily task list that is both manageable and attainable. That way, you are not bogged down with a feeling of anxiety or frustration, if you don’t complete all the tasks on the list. BUT, it is absolutely essential that you write down your tasks daily, at the least to serve as a reminder throughout your day. You can check your list during lunch time to see how you are progressing and make modifications as necessary. The same can be done for your goals. Write down your weekly, monthly or annual goals and monitor the progress often, to keep you on track and accountable.

Be Loving and Kind

Take a moment each day to be loving and kind to your family, friends, loved ones, colleagues and even strangers. Saying ‘I love you’ reassures your loved ones of your affection and there is nothing wrong in showing affection. It is a rather powerful and endearing gesture. Even a smile can brighten someone’s day and give them an uplifting feeling to overcome some sadness they may be feeling at the moment. Don’t underestimate the power of love and kindness. Positive actions, behaviour and words are very impactful. We see this reflected everyday in the lives of Oprah and Bill Gates, two of the world’s generous humanitarians.

Reflect on your day

At the end of each day, take time to pause and reflect on the highs and lows of your day. Ask yourself questions such as; Did I complete my tasks for the day? Did I achieve my goals today? Am I happy with my career, business or life? What can I do to become more productive, efficient or successful in my career or business? Did I make a positive impact on my family, friends, colleagues or a stranger? Was I loving or kind in my actions, words or behaviour? Is this the life I envision for myself? Reflecting on such questions will bring you to a place of self-realisation, and action to make necessary changes, to ensure success and happiness in your life.
