Anyone who knows me, knows that I have always had a love for Music, Fashion and the Entertainment industry. I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people in each realm from Fashion Designers, to Founders of Creative Houses and talents musicians, and I can truly say they all have one thing in common “they all have a passion for what they do!”

I had the pleasure of meeting Juno Award Winner Carlos Morgan a few years ago, and fell in love with his soulful R&B sound. As the years passed, our paths crossed multiple times and I can say that he is a very down to earth person who simply loves to sing. Whether he is performing at a large concert hall or for an intimate small affair, Carlos gives it his all on the stage.

Carlos brings back the smooth sounds of soulful music to the fore front!

In this exclusive interview, I had the chance to ask Carlos about his journey to and within the Music Industry. Sit back and enjoy an entertaining read about this very talented musician!

Can you elaborate on your experiences especially in the early years. Share with our readers what pinnacle point in your early years directed your focus towards the music industry?

My experiences, as a singer/musician in my early years, started when I was 7 years old. The very first time I sang was in church at 7 years old. Then when I turned 12 years old, I joined the church band. I was the youngest member and only singer of a 15 member horn and rhythm, Gospel band called “The Pape Ave. Brass Band”. I was with them for five years. When I started singing in R&B/Soul & Funk bands, it was then I realized I really wanted to pursue a career in music.

Tell us what inspires you when you are at the brainstorming level before you start writing a song?

What inspires me to write my songs have mostly been personal experiences that I’ve been through. I don’t really do a lot of brainstorming when it comes to song writing. Whether I’m writing a song for myself or co-writing with other songwriters, the song topics are centered around an experience I’ve been through or going through at the time that I’m writing the song.

Tell us what struggles and victories you have had throughout your career within the Music Industry

Some of the struggles I’ve been through in my career have been not getting the support from radio and major media outlets for my music, not getting support as an R&B/Soul artist from and within the Canadian Music Industry and not always getting the “fan” and audience support and turnout for my performances and purchasing of my music.

The victories I’ve had throughout my career are being acknowledged and awarded by most of the Canadian Music Awards including the Juno Award, The Much Music Video Award, SOCAN Music Award, Canadian Urban Music and Black Canadian Award. I’ve also been the first R&B/Soul artist in Canada perform at The Songwriters Association of Canada Bluebird North Song Writing Showcase Concert, the first Canadian R&B/Soul artist to win the SOCAN Urban Music Award and the first authentic R&B/Soul solo artist to be signed to a Canadian record major label. There have been many more accolades and achievements I’ve been blessed with.

Tell us the top 3 life lessons you have learned so far in life that has propelled you to success?

The three top life lessons I’ve learned that has propelled me to have success in my career are
1. Belief in The Almighty.
2. Believing in myself
3. Staying hungry and humble

How has your family/friends encouraged you on your career path in the Music Industry?

The way my family and friends encourage me on my path to a career in music are the comments I hear from people who tell me how my music have, and has, played a positive role in their lives, the feeling people walk away with after seeing me perform live and being told from friends and family to never give up on my music and goals in music.

What is your vision for the next 5 years?

The vision I have for the next 5 years, and that’s if The Almighty allows me to live and to continue as an artist is to write, produce and record great music, build my record label and entertainment company, “Solroc Music”. Sign, work with, write and produce new and upcoming Canadian artists, work more in the Canadian Music Industry to bring more awareness and exposure to Canadian R&B/Soul artists in Canada and around the world.

What are your favorite music genres and why?

My favorite genres of music are: Gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk, Reggae, Hip Hop, Pop, Jazz, Classical, Classic Rock, Country, Latin, South Asian and African. The reason why I love these genres of music are for various reasons. First of all, Gospel, R&B, Soul, Funk, Reggae and Hip Hop are the genres of music that moves and touches my heart, soul, mind and spirit. They are in my DNA and every part of my being and psyche. I grew up listening and learning about life through these genres of music. I didn’t like and appreciate Pop, Jazz, Classical, Classic Rock and Country till I was in my mid to late 20’s. Once my musical tastes and landscape began to open up, I was able to hear these other genres of music in a different way than when I was younger.

Being in a multicultural city like Toronto, I’ve had the chance to hear a lot of Latin, South Asian and African music. I don’t understand the lyrics but the rhythms, the percussion’s and the movements fills my soul with an intense, passionate and hard driving force that can’t be denied. With that said, all these genres speak to me in various ways but all reaching my heart, soul, mind and spirit.
