Mentorship by Hand‘ is a mentorship program for girls and will be facilitated by Illuminating Ladies in collaboration with the recipients of the 2016 Illuminessence National Women Awards. The program seeks to pair mentors with thirty high school girls (mentees) over a two-year period and help them through whatever transition that they may be going through.

During the duration of the program, mentors will provide leadership, guidance and experiential learning with respect to career aspirations and life goals by collaborating on means to achieve their goals, as well as implementing and evaluating strategies for success. Mentors will also help mentees identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Mentors are expected to:
Be a positive role model
Provide the “light” for the mentees to follow
Share lessons learned from their own experiences
Stay accessible, committed, and engaged during the life span of the program
Offer encouragement through genuine positive reinforcement

Mentees will be expected to:
Commit to self-development
Assume responsibility for acquiring or improving skills and knowledge
Discuss individual development planning with their mentors
Be open and honest with respect to their goals, expectations, challenges and concerns
Actively listen and ask questions
Seek advice, opinion, feedback and direction from mentors
Be open to constructive criticism/feedback
Respect their mentors time and resources
Stay accessible, committed and engaged during the life span of the program

The program will include workshops, team-building field trips and learning events that would help meet the program goals. At the end of the program, certificates will be awarded at a graduation ceremony to formally mark the closure of the formal mentoring relationship and to serve as another great opportunity for mentors and mentees to reflect on what was learned, discuss next steps for mentees and provide feedback on the benefits program policies and procedures.
