The recently elected President of Illuminating Ladies, Rebecca Cooper recently sat down with Illuminessence to talk about leadership, growth and the future of the organization. She re-emphasizes the importance of women working together and tirelessly pushing barriers to change the narrative of women into a positive one.

I am passionate about enhancing the capacity of women and girls to be productive, independent and I yearn for them to be much more respected in society.

What motivated you to run for President?

To thrive to serve humanity. The zeal to wanting to make a difference and the relentless nature of wanting the best of others. Followed up with the fact that Illuminating Ladies is an organization I hold dear to my heart. In addition, it’s members have so much potential that can be tapped into, under the right leadership- which with humility I am privilege to be a servant-leader to. I am also motivated because of the experiences. I believe every woman and girl should be offered the same opportunity that I have received, as I strongly believe in giving back to society and lending a helping hand to the needy.

What should we expect from Illuminating Ladies during your tenure?

I am reliable, responsible and hardworking. The kind of person that gets a job done when it needs to be done and I am willing to put the extra hours and effort to make it successful. I also believe in team work, hence I have as my mantra the African proverb “if you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, journey with others.” Hence, at Illuminating Ladies, we are a team of formidable, supportive, passionate, vibrant and intelligent young people who are ready to make a change in serving humanity. Therefore, during my tenure expect to see more mentorship for girls in various communities. A massive media campaign against domestic violence, sexual abuse, female genital mutilation and campaign on the girl child education. Lastly, would organize entrepreneurial trainings for women.

Leadership is not about position, but making an impact in one’s life.

How do you plan to positively impact society?

Our strategies for positive impact will be through skills management, increased awareness and sensitization for the rights of girls and provide a safe space for victims of abuse- through counselling and reintegration.
