I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Fashion Designer Maricar S. Nacarico during Hamilton Fashion Week and absolutely fell in love with one of her beautifully designed gowns, after being photographed beside one of her creations with beautiful model Jodian.

I absolutely fell in love with one of Maricar’s beautifully designed gowns and felt that I needed to know more about her!

During the interview, I found out what makes Maricar tick…what inspires her…and what she has in store for the future. She also provided some insights into her humble beginnings, and how she plans to grow her fashion empire!

Can you share with our readers what pinnacle point in your early years directed your focus towards fashion?
Since I was grade 2 in my home country, my love for clothing is apparent through my sketches of princess gowns. During class time most of my focus was sketching on my notebook not on the teacher’s lesson. As I grew up I had a specific style and passion for clothing. However, I did not pursue fashion for practical reasons. When I came to Canada in 2009, I decided to pursue my passion and I enrolled at George Brown College for Fashion Design program.

What inspires you at the brainstorming level before you start sketching?
Inspiration comes in many forms, I get inspired and motivated when I see something beautiful especially nature, particularly flowers.

What are some of the struggles and victories you’ve experienced within the Fashion Industry?
As a start-up fashion designer, trying to get into the industry is quite a struggle to create a brand with little to no money. So I started by creating custom made pieces, since it does not require a lot of capital. When I get recognition for my creation from clients or other designers in the industry, it’s victory for me.

What is your vision for the next 5 years?
In the next 5 years, I will have my own evening wear and bridal label.

What are your favorite fabrics to work with when you design? And why?
I love working with chiffon, lace and appliques. I feel so talented when I work with them, it gives me the moment to explore, experiment and experience art with a smile.

What advice would you offer anyone who wants to become a Fashion Designer?
Talent is not enough without doing your part so be ready, not only to work hard but harder. There will be a lot of sleepless night finishing projects, brainstorming, fulfilling due dates, fashion shows, production pressures and stress.  Learn to be organized and know how to prioritize things; it will save you from any additional stress.  Learn as much as you can at school, internship or from someone who is an expert in his/her craft.  It is best if you know a lot, all the aspect of designing/production. It will help you dearly when production problems arise.
